In conclusion, serum 3-BrY concentrations were higher in dogs with SRD or FRD than in healthy control dogs. Also, dogs with SRD had higher serum 3-BrY concentrations than dogs with FRD. This suggests that eosinophil-meditated inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of these disorders, especially SRD. Further research is needed to determine whether the measurement of 3-BrY is useful to sub-classify dogs with chronic enteropathy as having FRD or SRD. We have previously shown that a monoclonal antibody against eosinophil peroxidase (EPX) detects intact and degranulated eosinophils in canine jejunal mucosa (AJVR, January 2017). The aim of the present study was to compare EPX labelling and haematoxylin and eosin (H & E) staining of intact and degranulated eosinophils in endoscopically-derived samples of canine duodenal mucosa. Our objective was to determine whether EPX could improve the detection of intact and degranulated eosinophils in the duodenal mucosa of dogs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
