There was no apparent IFN-α response in the mild group except one patient who received IFN-α injection ( Fig. 2A) . When comparing the peak viral load of MERS-CoV in sputum and the serum levels of cytokines or chemokines at the first week of illness, a significant correlation was observed for IFN-α (ρ = 0.983, P = 0.001) (Fig. 3A) .
