Document: In this prospective cohort study, seven untrained German shepherd dogs (GSD) entering the military service and seven Scandinavian hounds (SH) used for competitive racing were examined. The latter underwent a three week training pause before entering into the study. All dogs had an, echocardiographic examination at baseline. NTproBNP was measured at baseline and after exercise. GSD were exercised for 10 minutes in protection training activities, i.e. high intensity interval training, while the SH were running continuously for 10 minutes with a biker attached. After two months of scheduled training NTproBNP levels were reassessed under the same conditions. Nonparametric tests were used for statistical analysis, and data are reported as median [range].
