Document: The high prevalence of positive titers in a naive population questions the accuracy of the SHI antibody titer test. Possible false positives caused by cross-reaction with antibodies against phospholipases from soil Corynebacterium spp. or C. pseudotuberculosis biovar ovis warrants further investigation. Equine herpes virus type 1-induced myeloencephalopathy (EHM) is a neurologic disease of horses that occurs as a complication of infection. Neurologic signs result from endothelial cell damage causing vasculitis and ischemic insult to the central nervous system. This disease causes considerable animal suffering and economic loss for the horse industry. Genetic variation in the virus explains some, but not all, of the disease's occurrence.
