Recently, studies in humans have suggested that in some patients with inflammatory bowel disease, microbial dysbiosis drives bile acid (BA) dysmetabolism. Primary BAs are synthesized by the liver and secreted into the intestinal lumen, where enzymatic reactions catalyzed by bacteria lead to BA biotransformation. Additionally, BAs participate in gastrointestinal mucosal defense. For example, secondary BAs have been shown to be anti-inflammatory as they have the potential to decrease the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-a. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the fecal BA profiles of dogs with chronic enteropathy.
