Document: The Nigeria EVD outbreak began on 20 July 2014, when a traveler from Liberia (the index case patient), who was infected with EBOV, arrived by commercial aircraft to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The traveler's movement was quickly restricted, patient samples were confirmed EBOV positive by independent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests within days, and intensive contact tracing was conducted. The Nigeria EVD outbreak ended on 20 October 2014, when the country was declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization. During that period, 20 individuals are reported to have been infected, of whom 8 died.
