The Pantanal is typified by a mosaic of the major biomes of central Brazil, Paraguayan Chaco, and Amazonian forest; a matrix of open fields interspersed with isolated patches of secondary forests and gallery forests border intermittent and permanent rivers (Cavalcanti and Gese 2009 ). The Pantanal is almost totally inundated during the rainy season in October-March, with mean monthly precipitation of 145 mm; during the dry season in April-September, its mean monthly precipitation is only 48 mm. Climate is seasonal, with warm, wet summers and cold, dry winters; wintersummer temperatures are 18-42°C (Cavalcanti and Gese 2009; Trolle 2003) .
