Early vaccine studies focused on leveraging strategies that had been successful for other vaccines including virus inactivation [12] [13] [14] and subunit immunogens [15] along with novel strategies such as recombinant viral constructs [11] . Although early subunit vaccine candidates were immunogenic [16] , none of the follow-up efficacy trials showed protection [17, 18] .
