Document: In contrast, infection with HCV is often chronic, and this parentally transmitted virus is one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease. It is responsible for approximately 180 million infections worldwide, with 3 million new infections occurring annually (Preciado et al., 2014) . The virus can be transmitted via unsafe medical practices including blood transfusions and needle reuse. As a result, developing countries present higher incidences than developed countries, with vast differences between countries (reviewed in Ansaldi, Orsi, Sticchi, Bruzzone, & Icardi, 2014) . The genome of HCV is about 9.6 kb, has a GC content of 56% and codes for a polypeptide that after processing results in 10 mature proteins.
