Document: In recent decades, few antiviral drugs against influenza virus infections have been available. This has limited their use in human and animal outbreaks. Indeed, antiviral drugs used during seasonal and pandemic outbreaks have usually been administered as mono-therapy and, sometimes, in an uncontrolled manner in farm animals. This has led to the emergence of viral strains that are resistant, especially to the compounds of the amantadane family. For this reason, it is particularly important to develop new antiviral drugs against influenza viruses. Indeed, although vaccination is currently the most effective means of mitigating the effects of influenza epidemics and can delay the spread of new pandemic viruses, as maintained by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP), antiviral drugs can be very useful in allowing manufacturers to prepare large quantities of pandemic vaccines. In addition, antiviral drugs are particularly valuable in complicated cases of influenza, particularly in hospitalized patients and in individuals at risk, such as the elderly or patients with chronic respiratory diseases. In such cases, it would be particularly desirable to have more antivirals and to administer them in an appropriate manner [249, 250] .
