Snippet: The left lung tissue samples were fixed in 10% buffered formalin for 48 h and then dehydrated by graded ethanol. After that, samples were embedded in paraffin and cut into 5-μm sections. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin according to routine procedure and then observed under a light microscope (VANOX, Olympus, Japan). Document: The left lung tissue samples were fixed in 10% buffered formalin for 48 h and then dehydrated by graded ethanol. After that, samples were embedded in paraffin and cut into 5-μm sections. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin according to routine procedure and then observed under a light microscope (VANOX, Olympus, Japan). The lung injury score was evaluated based on the following: a) alveolar congestion, b) hemorrhage, c) infiltration or aggregation of neutrophils in airspace or vessel wall, and d) thickness of alveolar wall/hyaline membrane formation. Each item was scored on a 5-point scale as follows: 0, minimal damage; 1, mild damage; 2, moderate damage; 3, severe damage; and 4, maximal damage [33] .
