In healthy elderly subjects, MPV-infection is rare: one large study showed MPV RNA in nasal specimens in 1-2% of symptomatic and in 0-2% of asymptomatic elderly subjects [40] . In another study, MPV was only found in 2% of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) [41] . The prevalence of symptomatic MPV infection is higher (up to 4-7%) in residents of long-term care facilities [40] . During outbreaks, up to 72% of elderly institutionalized persons may fall ill, 31% may develop radiographically confirmed pneumonia and 50% may die [42, 43] .
