Snippet: The PRISTINE study is the first exploratory clinical trial in humans to determine the feasibility of adding rifampicin to standard treatment with b-lactams for patients with community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia. The rifampicin is added to reduce the release of bacterial compounds within the first hours of therapy and thereby attenuate the inflammatory response. Document: The PRISTINE study is the first exploratory clinical trial in humans to determine the feasibility of adding rifampicin to standard treatment with b-lactams for patients with community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia. The rifampicin is added to reduce the release of bacterial compounds within the first hours of therapy and thereby attenuate the inflammatory response. In this initial small group, the b-lactam antibiotic with additional non-lytic rifampicin antibiotic versus lytic b-lactam antibiotic only treatment for pneumococcal pneumonia did not reveal differences in the blood concentrations of various inflammatory biomarkers, nor in the clinical response to treatment.
