Outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, the threat of avian influenza, the scourge of HIV/AIDS, the ongoing infant mortality from malaria and other dis eases can only be addressed through the cooperative ef forts of researchers. The urgency of climate change and environmental concerns, along with agricultural re search needs, supports the importance of sharing re search findings with those unable to afford ever growing subscription costs and permission barriers.
