As shown in Fig. 1 , a significant increase in cell death was observed upon exposure to 800 mM As (27% of control value). To investigate the time-dependent effect of As on cell viability, H4IIE cells were also maintained with serum free medium for 12 h and then incubated with 200 and 400 mM of As for 6, 12, 18 and 24 h. Results showed that cell viability was reduced to 23% of the control group following exposure to 400 mM As for 24 h. In addition, cytotoxicity was observed after As treatment (200 and 400 mM) for 12, 18 and 24 h. (Fig. 2) .
