The completeness of the record reflects the public health situation: Nigeria was prepared for the arrival of EBOV and was able to implement thorough contact tracing promptly after the index case was diagnosed, while the number of cases was still small. That effort was critical in containing the outbreak, but it is also very helpful in reconstructing its details afterward. Combined with sequence data, the transmission chain helps us interpret the changes occurring in the virus, because it generally lets us pinpoint where in the chain each new mutation actually occurred.
