Title: Enhancement of IgE-mediated histamine release from human basophils by viruses: role of interferon
  • Document date: 1977_4_1

Snippet: Since the basophils in human peripheral blood represent less than 1% of the total leukocyte population, the majority of the virus-induced interferon in leukocyte cultures almost certainly comes from the other cell types (26) . In an individual not immune to a particular virus, interferon could be nonspecifically induced by the interaction of that virus with a variety of cell types (e.g., lymphocytes, macrophages, fibroblasts). In an individual im.....
Document: Since the basophils in human peripheral blood represent less than 1% of the total leukocyte population, the majority of the virus-induced interferon in leukocyte cultures almost certainly comes from the other cell types (26) . In an individual not immune to a particular virus, interferon could be nonspecifically induced by the interaction of that virus with a variety of cell types (e.g., lymphocytes, macrophages, fibroblasts). In an individual immune to a particular virus, interferon could be specifically induced by the interaction of that virus with immune lymphocytes (26) . The resulting interferons, regardless of origin, could then act on the basophils to enhance histamine release.
