Moreover, there is currently no report confirming the protective effect of T cells during a primary SARS-CoV infection in humans. In fact, research in this area is hampered by the lack of systematic sample collection during the 2003 SARS outbreak which lasted for a relatively short period of , 16 weeks. Since there is no second major outbreak of SARS, the protective effect of memory T cell response in recovered SARS patients is not known. Nevertheless, the phenotype and cytokine profile of the T cells in these recovered individuals indicate the possible protective effect of T cell response in the initial infection or during any subsequent infections.
