Inhibition of Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 1 Ameliorates Inflammation and Macrophage and Neutrophil Activation in Alcoholic Liver Disease in Mice

In agreement with previous studies indicating that chronic alcohol use causes hepatic macrophage infiltration and activation, (1, 3, 26) we found increased expression of the Kupffer cell/macrophage markers F4/80 and CD68 at the mRNA level. Treatment with the TREM-1 inhibitors significantly attenuated alcohol-induced expression of both F4/80 and CD68 in the liver, indicating anti-inflammatory effects (Fig. 3A,B) . We also found a significant decrease in F4/80 expression on paraffin-embedded liver sections by IHC in alcohol-fed mice treated with either GF9-HDL or GA/E31-HDL compared to the EtOH-fed vehicle-treated group (Fig. 3C,D) .
