They include: the cytoskeleton, organelles and membrane-trafficking intermediates, signal transduction pathways, cell cycle regulators, the organelle and protein recycling machinery, and cell-death pathways (Table 1 ). Studying the mechanisms by which virulence factors target host cells has two important impacts. First, such studies reveal crucial mechanisms of infection. Second, these studies aid in the elucidation of fundamental cellular mechanisms-for example, tyrosine kinase signaling or actin-based motility, to name a very few.
