Both HCoV-NL63 and HCoV-229E are group I coronaviruses and encode for only one accessory gene product between the S and E genes [34] . Accessory genes are poorly characterized and the functions of the gene products are not well understood. Initial research into the functions of these genes has shown that they are nonessential and dispensable for virus growth in cell culture [5, 6, 35] . More recent studies have shown that the accessory genes are required for in vivo infection and pathogenecity in the natural host [6, 7, [36] [37] [38] .
