However, these studies were not performed by molecular methods and did not include genetic characterisation as we have done. Although it was proved that in cases of lower respiratory tract infections lungs could contain a high number of virus particles (8), we could detect only BPIV3, even though samples were collected in late winter. This may be because the animals were in a convalescent phase of infection or a majority of tissue samples suspected of being from pneumonic animals did not contain virus particles.
