Dogs were included in the study if they had a histological diagnosis of hepatitis and the presence of leptospires identified by FISH, with clusters suggesting living, reproducing organisms. Liver histology in all cases was reviewed by a single pathologist. Cases without histopathological diagnosis were excluded. The presence of clinical evidence of renal involvement:azotaemia (serum creatinine > 140 mmol/Lbased on IRIS guidelines) and glycosuria were further criteria of exclusion.
