MgSO 4 alone or in combination with salbutamol had a mild positive effect on clinical scores of severe asthmatic horses. It had more effect on clinical scores than IOS parameters, which could be due to an undetected bronchodilatory effect or a change in the breathing strategy. Neonatal diarrhea is a major source of economic loss to the cattle industry and the leading cause of calf mortality in most countries. The major goals of treatment are to correct dehydration, increase blood pH, restore electrolyte concentrations and provide nutritional support. It is quite possible that the use of oral electrolytes in calves with moderate dehydration and acidosis is of equal or perhaps even greater benefit than giving large volumes of fluids either intravenously or subcutaneously.
