Snippet: Results demonstrated no significant changes in sodium/potassium ratio, blood glucose, or echocardiographic variables. A significant increase in blood pressure from baseline occurred in the treatment group when compared to the control group at d7 (P = 0.014). Expected changes in hematologic and biochemical variables due to prednisone administration (neutrophilia, eosinopenia, isosthenuria, and elevated ALP and ALT) occurred in the treatment group......
Document: Results demonstrated no significant changes in sodium/potassium ratio, blood glucose, or echocardiographic variables. A significant increase in blood pressure from baseline occurred in the treatment group when compared to the control group at d7 (P = 0.014). Expected changes in hematologic and biochemical variables due to prednisone administration (neutrophilia, eosinopenia, isosthenuria, and elevated ALP and ALT) occurred in the treatment group. Overall, this study demonstrated that anti-inflammatory doses of glucocorticoids in clinically healthy dogs have the potential to impact cardiac function by causing elevated blood pressure and thus increased afterload.
