Coronaviruses were not considered as a major public health threat before 2003, as they were known to cause only mild upper respiratory tract infections. The first known serious coronavirus infection was the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2002, which caused an outbreak with approximately 8400 cases and 800 deaths (World Health Organization, 2003) .
