Snippet: S ORTING of newly synthesized proteins in the exocytic pathway is a fundamental problem in cell biology which has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Secreted and plasma membrane proteins follow a common pathway through the cell: from the ER, through the Golgi complex, to the cell surface (32) . Resident proteins ofthe ER and the Golgi complex are specifically retained . Although much is known regarding the signal sequence-mediate.....
Document: S ORTING of newly synthesized proteins in the exocytic pathway is a fundamental problem in cell biology which has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Secreted and plasma membrane proteins follow a common pathway through the cell: from the ER, through the Golgi complex, to the cell surface (32) . Resident proteins ofthe ER and the Golgi complex are specifically retained . Although much is known regarding the signal sequence-mediated translocation of proteins across the membrane of the ER (46) , less is known regarding the trafficking of proteins once they have entered this pathway.
