For any infectious disease, the vaccine development pathway from candidate design, via preclinical screening, through Phase I-III clinical trials to final approval for public administration is long, demanding, and expensive. 29 While this has now been prioritized by international funding agencies for Zika, it may take several years for a vaccine to come to commercial fruition.
