Document: ARDS or ALI is a serious clinical problem with high mortality. The risk factors leading to ALI/ARDS include head injury, intracranial disorders, sepsis and infections. Pulmonary embolic disorders such as fat and air embolism are less common causes. Ischemia/reperfusion lung injury may develop as a consequence of several pulmonary disorders such as lung transplantation. Gastric aspiration occurs frequently in several conditions such as anesthesia, trauma and pregnancy. The ventilator-induced ALI has been attributed to the deleterious effects on capillary stress due to alveolar overdistension. In experimental studies, phorbol myristate acetate and oleic acid have been employed to induce ALI.
