Title: Chronic hM3Dq signaling in microglia ameliorates neuroinflammation in male mice Document date: 2020_1_28
ID: ely200x3_3
Snippet: Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system. They account for 5-10% of the total cells in the brain and are necessary for maintaining brain homeostasis (Li and Barres, 2018) . Document: Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system. They account for 5-10% of the total cells in the brain and are necessary for maintaining brain homeostasis (Li and Barres, 2018) . Microglia are distributed throughout the CNS and dynamically survey the environment by extending and retracting their highly ramified processes. Upon environmental alterations, microglia quickly modify their activation state and adjust their range of effects which include phagocytosis of apoptotic cells, modulation of neuronal activity, elimination of synapses, production of neuromodulatory factors that support synaptic plasticity as well as release of cytokines to modulate inflammation in the adult brain (Kettenmann et al., 2011; Li and Barres, 2018; Wake et al., 2011) .
