Native to West Africa, these snakes make popular pets because of their relatively modest size (Õ…1.5 m), docile behavior, and ease of care. Selective captive breeding has resulted in a tremendous variety of colors and patterns (morphs), many of which command high prices. Since the late 1990s, veterinarians have been aware of respiratory tract disease as a common syndrome affecting ball pythons. This syndrome is often characterized by pharyngitis, sinusitis, stomatitis, tracheitis, and a proliferative interstitial pneumonia. The clinical and epidemiological characteristics suggested an infectious etiology.
