Document: During the pre-engraftment period, the risk of opportunistic infection varies depending on the type of anticancer drugs used, conditioning intensity (myeloablative or reduced intensity), and presence of acute GVHD. Autologous HSCT leads to more rapid recovery of immune function than allogeneic HSCT. In the post-engraftment period, the immune system is reconstituted and recovered in autologous HSCT recipients. However, allogeneic HSCT recipients undergoing long-term immunosuppressive therapy for chronic GVHD remain at risk of infection. Table 1 shows the risk factors for, and infectious diseases commonly encountered after, HSCT.
