The alternatively activated macrophages secrete anti-inflammatory mediators, promote tissue repair, and regulate immune response in the initiation, development, and cessation of many inflammatory diseases through signal pathways including STATs, interferon regulatory factors (IRFs), NF-κB, AP1, PPARγ and CREB [12] . The important areas for future work should focus on exploring the full spectrum of macrophage polarization, uncovering the mechanisms with regard to the transformation of polarization, and finding the targets to the therapies of inflammatory diseases [22] .
