NGS offers a number of benefits for the study of host-pathogen interactions. Increased sensitivity and accuracy over microarrays allow important events such as the initial host response to viral replication to be studied in greater detail (7) . Also, host and viral RNA transcripts can be assayed simultaneously, rather than on separate technical platforms, allowing greater reproducibility and increased confidence in the results. Finally, because NGS allows total RNA to be assayed, insights are not limited to annotated transcripts or even protein-coding genes.
