Canine angiostrongylosis is an increasingly reported disease worldwilde, including many European countries, possibly due to climatic factors, presence of foxes (acting as reservoir) or more simply, to the availability of more accurate diagnostic methods. Although detection of the first-stage larvae (L1) using the Baermann technique on faecal samples (preferably collected over three consecutive days) remains the gold standard, recently developed serological and molecular tests (quantitative polymerase chain reaction, qPCR) are now available. Until now, the prevalence of canine angiostrongylosis among healthy and coughing dogs in Belgium was unknown.
