Although detection of the first-stage larvae (L1) using the Baermann technique on faecal samples (preferably collected over three consecutive days) remains the gold standard, recently developed serological and molecular tests (quantitative polymerase chain reaction, qPCR) are now available. Until now, the prevalence of canine angiostrongylosis among healthy and coughing dogs in Belgium was unknown.
