Document: Brenda N. Bonnett consults with Agria insurance company on various projects. Agria insurance company has also funded work leading to the development of the insurance data base that my study was based on. Canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) is a multifactorial contagious disease caused by respiratory viruses and selected bacterial pathogens. CIRD has been shown to be a predisposing factor in the development of bacterial pneumonia (BP) in dogs housed in dense populations such as kennels and rehoming centers. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of viral co-infection and to assess its effects on disease severity in household dogs diagnosed with BP.
