Eighteen healthy cats, older than 7 years, with normal TT4 and Crea <1.8 mg/dL were enrolled as control group. Data about physical exam, emogram, serum biochemistry and serum TT4 concentration were evaluated. SDMA was measured on serum left over from previous analyzes and stored at À80°C. SDMA measurement was performed in serum samples collected at the time of diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and after methimazole treatment when TT4 normalized, between 10 to 90 days after initiation of the treatment. Follow-up was available for 8/19 hyperthyroid cats; SDMA was measured using a validated immunoassay (IDEXX SDMA test).
