Despite the high prevalence of canine pancreatitis in postmortem studies and the introduction of new diagnostic tests, it is believed that the disease, particularly in its chronic form, remains under recognised due to the non-specific nature of presenting signs. Histology is considered to be the gold standard for diagnosis of canine pancreatitis, however, most clinicians are reluctant to take pancreatic biopsies due to significant risks to the patient.
