Document: In humans suffering from chronic heart failure (CHF) iron deficiency is a common comorbidity and intravenous iron therapy significantly improves exercise capacity and quality of life. Consequently, the European Society of Cardiology Guidelines (2016) recommend intravenous iron therapy in symptomatic patients with CHF and iron deficiency defined as serum ferritin <100 μg/L, or ferritin between 100–299 μg/L and transferrin saturation <20%. In dogs it is unknown if iron deficiency is a comparable comorbidity requiring supplementation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the iron status in dogs at various stages of chronic heart failure.
