Document: Disclosures Renal a-klotho functions as a co-receptor for fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) and therefore plays an important role in phosphate homeostasis. The transmembrane protein is primarily found in the renal tubules and its expression is reduced in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In human studies and animal models, a-klotho deficiency has been associated with hyperphosphatemia, renal fibrosis, and increased mortality. Chronic kidney disease is a common disorder in aging cats, with hyperphosphatemia and FGF-23 excess as important prognostic indicators, but the role of a-klotho has not been assessed in cats to date. Therefore, we aimed to localize renal a-klotho protein in feline kidney tissue.
