Total cases per federal state and district are recorded in the database as reported to the local health authorities. The reporting date -the date on which the local health authority became aware of the case and recorded it electronically -is used to display the newly transmitted cases per day. A few days can pass between the notification by the doctors and laboratories to the health authority and the transmission of the data to the RKI, henceforth the exact time of infection of the reported cases cannot usually be determined. The notification date to the health department therefore best reflects the time of detection of the infection (diagnosis date) and thus the current infection process.
