Although the detection of HRV RNA by RT-PCR is not proof of ongoing viral replication, we were also able to detect replicating virus from the lung tissue of a subset of patients with a fatal outcome, thus demonstrating that these viruses were viable and potentially responsible for the pulmonary disease in these patients.
