Document: Traditionally, nasopharyngeal washes or swabs were used for the diagnosis of respiratory viral infection. Sputum is secreted Table 4 Comparing baseline characteristics of samples tested negative and positive for respiratory syncytial virus. Note: there were 4 samples with missing values on the results. They were counted in the total column, but not counted in the negative and positive columns. The samples positive for RSV were more likely to be obtained by throat swab (0.26 vs 0.24; P < .001). The positive rate for RSV was the highest in winter (0.72), followed by spring (0.21), autumn (0.05), and summer (0.02). There was no significant difference in the source of sample between groups of positive versus negative for RSV.
