In veterinary patients, collection of urine, by cystocentesis, for quantitative bacterial culture (QBC) is the current gold standard for diagnosing UTIs. To ensure accurate results, immediate culture is recommended. However, most general practitioners do not perform urine culture in‐house and samples must be sent to an external laboratory. Refrigeration or the addition of preservatives, such as boric acid, have been traditionally used but previous veterinary studies suggest that these methods can significantly increase the number of false‐negative results.
