Cardiac cachexia was defined as presence unintentional weight loss (> 5% within 12 months after diagnosis) together with anorexia and muscle weakness, anemia (red cell count < 5.5 10 6 /lL, hemoglobin < 12 g/dL, or both), hypoalbuminemia (plasma albumin < 3.0 g/dL), and azotemia (blood urea nitrogen > 26 g/dL, creatinine > 1.6 g/dL, or both). Dogs with other cardiac disorders and other systemic disorders those would cause anemia and hypoalbuminemia were excluded from this study.
