Whenever the mutant reproductive number R m exceeds one, there is a mean tendency for the mutant strain to increase in frequency once it has been successfully transmitted to susceptible individuals (i.e. α > 1 because R m > 1 > R w ). The greater the ratio R m /R w , the more rapid the increase in frequency.
