Data are expressed as counts and percentages for categorical variables and as medians (interquartile ranges [IQRs]) for continuous variables. Qualitative and quantitative differences between groups were analyzed using chi-square or Fisher's exact tests for categorical parameters and Mann-Whitney's tests for continuous parameters, as appropriate. The cumulative probabilities of clinical deterioration were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the effect of various variables on the hazard of clinical deterioration.
