This suggests a need for countries to quickly undertake extensive training of field epidemiologists to identify and isolate contacts of those who are diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. Currently, Africa has the lowest testing rate of any part of the world. Since testing is a necessary precondition for contact tracing and isolation, countries should scale up their testing, contact tracing and isolation capacities within the short window of opportunity that remains to minimize the local impact of the pandemic.
