Microscopy of lung tissue showed diffuse alveolar damage with hyaline membranes, sparse chronic interstitial inflammation and foci of bronchopneumonia. The deceased was a non-smoker, who did not suffer from a serious illness. He was overweight (BMI = 34 kg/m2), an emerging predictor for poor outcome of COVID-19.
